Universities are social actors and important drivers of social, ecological, cultural and economic development. Fairtrade Universities actively take on this role and integrate fair trade with all its aspects into everyday university life. The award is presented by the TransFair association.

Since November 2020, the University of Bonn has also been able to call itself a Fairtrade University. A group of dedicated students worked towards the title for two years, putting their heart and soul into initiating and supporting the application process. To become a Fairtrade University, a university must demonstrably fulfill five criteria that reflect its commitment to fair trade at various levels. For example, there must be a resolution by the university management in favor of a Fairtrade University and fair trade products must be offered at meetings and public events.
