Bonn - All-round sustainability 2024 - ecological, regional, fair

For the fifth time, Bonn celebrated the Sustainability Festival on Münsterplatz on Saturday, September 21, from 11 am to 5 pm.

Around 50 initiatives, companies and organizations showed what is possible for young and old for the benefit of ecological and social sustainability. The content was based on the Fair Week - annual motto: Fair. And no more degrees! - the focus for many was on climate justice and climate change.

In addition, many questions dealt with our lifestyle and everyday behavior in general: What food should be on our tables? What can be done about the throwaway society? What could fair rules for the fashion industry look like? Are there supply chains that are consistently fair and ecological? How can we campaign locally for international justice? How can we promote nature in the city?

The focus was on the diverse commitment of civil society and its motivating and lively world of ideas, also against the backdrop of the international sustainability goals, the UN SDGs. The participants provided information about new developments, projects and the background to their work, often with entertaining activities for children and adults alike. Last but not least, the festival also served as an opportunity for the participants to get to know each other and network further.

In September, at the start of Fair Week, the time had finally come - after the pandemic had thwarted the city of Bonn's plans like so many others in previous years: the big sustainability festival "Bonn - Sustainable All Round" took place on Münsterplatz on 17 September in a colorful and varied way. More than 50 initiatives, associations, organizations, businesses and city departments accepted the invitation to present their sustainable efforts and inspiring ideas to the citizens of Bonn. Opened by Mayor Katja Dörner and Dr. Gisela Burckhardt, Chairwoman of the Board of this year's annual partner Femnet, the lively festival with a good atmosphere - despite some squalls and small rain showers - demonstrated the diversity and range of local commitment to sustainability.

Around 700 visitors came to the stands on Saturday to find out more - about the opportunity to repair household items themselves, about the important commitment to wild and honey bees, about fair footballs to try out and about organic and fair food, to name just a few examples. Highlights included a great fashion show by four Bonn fashion stores and labels, rousing performances by the two music bands Kültürklüngel and Saragina, a cooking show with eco-fair ingredients, the award ceremony for the winning classes of the Bonn Recycling Challenge and a series of market talks on stage, i.e. interviews on eco-fair topics by the participating sustainability stakeholders in Bonn.

Bonn - All-round sustainability - Review 2021

What's crawling and flying there? This curious question kicked off the 2021 "Bonn - Sustainable All Around" event series on September 10. The guest: the Horticulture Competence Center, which combines science, experimentation and advice under one roof on the Klein-Altendorf campus of the University of Bonn. The focus was on ecological diversity in orchards, and the ecological diversity of a complex system could be experienced virtually. At the very end, a detailed question: What important role do ground beetles play in the orchard habitat? Because that was the topic of the day's quiz - at the end of each event there was a question on the topic of the event, with each correct answer being entered into the draw for a voucher from a sustainable business in Bonn.

But first things first: The series of events was opened by Mayor Melanie Grabowy. She warmly welcomed the guests and placed the six online events and one face-to-face event in the context of Fair Week. September 10 was the start of the nationwide Fair Week, which this year had the slogan: "Shaping a fair future - #fairtrade for human rights worldwide". This is an important issue, as around 40 million people alone live in modern slavery and around 160 million children are forced to work.

Of vegetables, gardens, money and greenery

However, fair trade in countries of the global South is not the only building block for a change in our way of life towards greater sustainability - it goes without saying that a focus on the regional and the ecological here on site is also part of this. A total of six online events and one face-to-face event over twelve days therefore focused on the topics of regional & ecological, fair & conscious, city & nature and, for the first time, cultural & transformative.

The questions posed to the experts invited to the online events were diverse: How can you get super-fresh vegetables without having your own garden? Do chic and sustainable go together when it comes to fashion? What does ethical investment look like? What is the green situation in Bonn? And can you actually plant animals? The interview guests from the Kompetenzzentrum Gartenbau und Solawi, Femnet and Oikocredit Westdeutscher Förderkreis, the Amt für Umwelt und Stadtgrün and the "Thousands of Gardens - Thousands of Species" campaign had helpful answers and lots of tips.

In your ear and before your eyes - culture and sustainability

Finally, on the presence day on Münsterplatz, the focus was on culture. This is because more and more artistic forms of presentation and cultural events are taking place in the context of sustainability. Following the opening of the event by Mayor Katja Dörner, discussions with artists and cultural professionals focused on their contribution to the sustainability goals, as well as innovative ecological and aesthetic impulses. In addition, economic and social aspects of cultural life were also put under the sustainability microscope. Videos complemented the programme and presented cultural contributions and the colourful field of initiatives and organizations supporting the event "Bonn - Sustainable All Around". Also present: the general music director of the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Dirk Kaftan, the theater director Simon Solberg and the visual artist Jens Mohr.
